About Squalene
Squalene is highly unsaturated hydrocarbon made inside a living body; it is a part of human body?s composition structure. The substance can be also found in cellular tissues of animals and plants in small quantity.
Edible squalene is currently extracted from the liver oil of deep-sea sharks after the super-refining process by eliminating substances other than squalene that can easily acidify in its original state.
Deep-sea sharks inhabit 500 ~ 1,000 m underwater where hardly any light reach. Their living environment can be characterized in four phrases: darkness, enormous water pressure (50 ~ 100x of atmospheric pressure), low temperature (2~4˚C), and scarce dissolved oxygen content. Deep-sea sharks can survive in this unfavorable condition because of a big liver that takes up a quarter of the total body weight, and squalene inside that liver.
Why Do We Need Squalene?
Human kind has never been threatened of its mere survival as it is today by several factors. Ozone layer is destroyed, air is polluted, and land and water are contaminated with countless types of pesticides and heavy metal for many reasons; we cannot fully be comfortable about a single item on our dinner table. Even though a human body can protect itself to a certain extent, it can not effectively function when attacked by overbearing amount of pollutants.
How Does Squalene Work?
Squalene is often made inside a liver to be used in producing steroid hormone and bile acid. It heightens metabolism by easing out the oxygen supply to different organs. It also has a significant effect on rejuvenating skin, too. The substance can be taken as a dietary supplement, too.
Quality of squalene is determined by freshness and the refinery method. Semo manages a fishing ground located in the Indian Ocean to select deep-sea sharks with high squalene content.
